Labour MP Adrian Vassallo asked Social Policy Minister Lawrence Gonzi in parliament to list the number of people who depended on social assistance (relief).

The minister said there were 390 single men and 1,173 single women, 541 married men and 276 married women, 20 widowers and 169 widows, seven divorced men and 47 divorced women.

The list also includes 165 legally separated men and 1,797 legally separated women, 78 de facto separated men, 563 women and three separated housewives.

He said 1,020 single (not married) mothers and two single fathers also received assistance.

He said there were 564 women and six men who received social assistance for caring for their parents.
