The removal of an old perimeter wall outside Fort St Elmo has opened up a beautiful panorama of the entrance to Grand Harbour, commanded by the military architecture of two eras - the massive bastions of the Middle Ages, and the gun post built during the second world war. Readers of The Times, who recalled that part of the wall had collapsed some time ago, damaging several cars, do not want to see it rebuilt, to again block out the magnificent view. Only the top of the gun post was visible when there was the wall. The breakwater arm was completely hidden from view, for instance.
