A large field in an ODZ area in Burmarrad has been cleared of all soil and is being investigated for archaeological remains, following a proposal to build a petrol station on the site.
The investigations were re-quested by the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage to ensure no remains would be affected by the proposed development. Mepa said this would be part of the Environmental Planning Statement.
Past development applications for the site have been consistently refused, including requests to build a boundary wall because it was not seen as necessary for agricultural purposes.
A boundary wall was still built and an enforcement notice for the site was served on Anthony Fenech in 1997, which is “pending direct action”.
