Salina was shaken by a powerful fireworks factory explosion on Monday morning, sending dense clouds of smoke billowing into the sky and damaging properties in the surrounding areas.

Two farmers and a food courier were slightly injured by the blast, and four cows were killed.

The blast shattered windows of buildings in surrounding areas, in one instance showering two hotel guests with glass as they slept.

Motorists were urged to avoid the area and nearby residents have been evacuated. 

Monday's explosion was the second to rock the Lourdes Fireworks Factory on Triq il-Qadi since 2018, when an explosion at the site left two men with serious injuries.
