One resident was admitted to hospital for treatment

A resident was admitted to hospital after a fire which broke out in a Birkirkara property on Monday, the Civil Protection Department said.

In a Facebook post, CPD shared photos showing the extent of the damage caused by the fire, which broke out after neighbours heard a loud explosion at 4.10pm.

The incident happened in Triq San Konstantinu.

"Firefighters from Fire Stations 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, and 11 were deployed to the scene, where they carried out a long and delicate operation to successfully bring the fire under control and prevent further escalation," the post read.

Neighbours previously told Times of Malta they believed the property to be empty, having been recently vacated by an elderly resident.

The cause of the incident is unknown. Three fire engines arrived within minutes and cordoned off the area.

Firefighters wearing breathing equipment entered the property to confirm that no one was in there and to look for any gas cylinders or any other incendiary material.
