PL approves new batch of candidates as Rababah candidacy not yet discussed

The Labour Party has approved a new batch of candidates for the upcoming general election, including nine incumbent ministers and parliamentary secretaries.  

In a statement on Wednesday afternoon the Labour Party listed all the candidates that were approved by the PL Executive on Tuesday.  

The list includes seven new candidates who are Miguel Balzan (districts 9 and 10) Rosette Cassar (districts 8 and 10) Jorge Grech (district 2) Eric Plumpton (districts 3 and 4) Kaydem Schembri (district 5) Nigel Vella  (district 1) Shana Woods (districts 2 and 4).  

Most of the approved candidates, are sitting MPs and include: Jo Etienne Abela (districts 13 and 10) Abigail Camilleri (district 13) Clint Camilleri (district 13) Clyde Caruana (districts 2 and 8) Rosianne Cutajar (districts 6 and 12) Miriam Dalli (districts 5 and 11) Deo Debattista (district 1)  

Chris Fearne (districts 3 and 4) Clifton Grima (districts 9 and 10) Anton Refalo (district 13), Silvio Schembri (district 6 and 7) Amanda Spiteri Grech (districts 2 and 4) Romilda Zarb (districts 11 and 12) and Alison Zerafa Civelli (district 2).  

Two candidates- Franco Mercieca (district 12) and Edward Cassar Delia (district 2 and 10) have run on the PL ticket in the past.  

Sources said that Omar Rababah’s candidacy was not discussed on Tueday party executive meeting.  

Times of Malta is informed that his nomination still needs to be vetted by the party’s candidates commission before eventually going to the party executive.  

It is not clear whether Rababah has formally submitted the application to run as a PL candidate.

Rababah, a Maltese citizen with a Syrian and Muslim background was on the receiving end of racist backlash after announcing his intention to contest the general election.
