The Labour has criticised the decision to move the Valletta Sunday market to Blata l-Baja from St James Ditch, saying the government imposed the decision without consultation, and the new site is inadequate.

The stalls are due to be set up on the site of the Park and Ride on Sunday week.

PL spokesman Chris Cardona said the government had acted in a manner which was insensitive and which would threaten the livelihood of some 200 people.

He said the new site lacked facilities for vendors and buyers and would impact on business. The vendors would also lose business from tourists who came on cruise ships, he said.

He said the government should hold talks with the hawkers.

The secretariat for small businesses in announcing the move last week, had said that the transfer of the market had been discussed with interested parties.

The market is moving because of works in connection with the new bus terminus.
