The Ministry for Resources and Infrastructure has submitted a development application to the Malta Environment and Planning Authority for the project which will eventually lead to the restoration of the Maghtab, tal-Qortin and Wied Fulija dump sites.
Minister Ninu Zammit said yesterday that the project was to be co-funded by the Maltese government and the European Union and was expected to take a number of years.
The application submitted to MEPA is accompanied by a project description statement proposing the introduction of controls to stop the spread of pollution at the three sites.
A call for tenders will be published once the permit is issued, the minister said.
The project will be carried out according to international standards. It should eventually lead to the resurfacing and rehabilitation of the three sites, making them available for public use once again, he added.
A study was carried out which consisted of a detailed waste investigation, the monitoring of air substances, sea temperatures and ground water.
The results obtained are assisting in the examination of the impact of the environment now and in the future.
Mr Zammit said that through the project, the ministry would be able to effectively reduce these impacts, using systems to gather gases from waste, lower temperatures and treat the substances.
