The Malta Environment and Planning Authority has approved the installation of nine radars in strategic sites as part of a sea traffic management system that will monitor vessels up to a distance of 30 miles off shore.

The applicant was the Malta Maritime Authority. Two radars will be installed in Dingli, two in Delimara, two on the Valletta port control tower and one on a fort in Madliena.

In the future, two more will be installed on Gozo, one of them on Tal-gordan lighthouse.

Swedish telecommunications giant Ericsson will be providing the apparatus. About €2.5 million of the project costs will be financed through EU funds.
