Plans for animal rehoming centre announced

The new facility, in Siġġiewi, will include shelters for dogs, cats, horses and other animals

The government has announced plans for a €6.5 million National Animal Rehoming Centre.

Agriculture and animal welfare minister Anton Refalo unveiled the project, describing it as an important step to address growing pressures on the Animal Welfare Directorate.

He said in a statement by his ministry that the new centre will provide adequate space for rescued or confiscated animals, where they will receive care, rehabilitation and a renewed chance of adoption.

The total investment, estimated at around €6.5 million, will cover construction and equipment.  The centre, in Siġġiewi, will include shelters for dogs, cats, horses and other animals, along with assisted therapy areas, an educational centre and open spaces accessible to the public to promote awareness and community involvement.

The facility will be managed jointly with non-governmental organisations (NGOs). The government will retain responsibility for the investment and strategic oversight, while day-to-day operations will be entrusted to organisations with experience in animal welfare.

Parliamentary Secretary Alicia Bugeja Said said the project marks a significant step towards a more modern and sustainable system for animal welfare in Malta.
