Honorary consuls have an important role to play and this includes attracting foreign students to study in Malta and sensitising the international community to Malta’s plight in addressing the influx of irregular migration, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said.

He was speaking to a hall filled with consuls who visited him to exchange New Year’s greetings this morning.

Dr Muscat thanked them for their work, which was appreciated, and added that the government planned to open an embassy in Doha, Qatar, as well as set up a number of consulates in different regions ranging from Algiers, Misurata, Shanghai and for the first time in Latin America and San Paolo.
