Articles in this and other papers have extolled the virtues of the new plastic bottles for soft drinks, implying that the new bottles are better for consumers and offer more choice. Unfortunately, it seems that the glass bottles will not be among the choices offered. Already, one leading supermarket has removed that option - for most drinks it's plastic or nothing.
Unfortunately, plastic bottles have their own problems. The new bottles come shrink-wrapped in plastic, unlike the efficient crates with inbuilt handle that made the glass bottles so easy to carry.
The soft plastic material of which the bottles are made also deforms easily while pouring, making spillage more common. How about letting customers decide instead of taking the choice away?
