The final line-up for today's UEFA Under-21 Championship play-off draw in Nyon was completed yesterday with the last qualifying game between Russia and Slovakia.
Portugal won Group Three with matches to spare but the runner-up spot was still at stake before the Slovakia-Russia match in Senec got underway.
The Slovaks needed a substantial victory to deny Andrei Tchernychov's side their place in the play-offs for next year's finals. However, in the end the hosts could only manage a slim 1-0 win.
From Group Eight, Hungary are through to the play-offs despite dropping two points in their 2-2 match against table-toppers Croatia on Tuesday.
A point would not have been enough for the home side to go through had rivals Sweden not fallen to a shock 4-1 home defeat against Iceland in their final game.
Goals from Tamas Vasko and Tibor Tisza were enough to spark Hungary's celebrations after the match in Kaspovar.
Malta U-21 completed their Group Eight commitments with a creditable draw at home to Bulgaria. Mark Miller's team finished with five points after a win (H vs Iceland 1-0) and two draws (A vs Iceland 0-0 and H vs Bulgaria 1-1).
Today's draw will see the eight group winners playing against the eight runners-up in two-legged ties scheduled for November 12 and 16.
The eight group winners are the Netherlands, Denmark, Portugal, France, Italy, Germany, Belgium and Croatia.
The runners-up are the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Russia, Switzerland, Slovenia, England, Serbia and Montenegro and Hungary.
