A young football player was taken to hospital after a fight during a match between Naxxar and Żabbar Under 17s on Sunday.
The Naxxar Lions player was hit by a player from Żabbar SP during a scuffle involving players from both teams, the Malta Football Association said.
Żabbar officials said two of their players were also injured in the fight.
Sources told Times of Malta that paramedics were called onto the pitch to provide medical assistance, with the injured player taken to hospital for further treatment.
The match was stopped following the incident, and the referee decided to abandon the match.
Both police and the Malta Football Association said it was investigating the incident.
"The Malta FA strongly condemns any form of violence, altercation, or unsporting behaviour on or around the field of play," it said.
“Such conduct goes against the fundamental values of football, including respect, discipline, and fair play, which the Association works continuously to promote across all levels of the game, particularly within youth football.”
