Over 250 tons of fish were landed in the fourth quarter of last year, according to the National Statistics Office.

The 257,857-kilogram haul represented an increase of 17.7 per cent over the same period in 2008. The reason for the surge was a much bigger catch of dolphin fish (lampuki) - 60.1 per cent higher.

At the same time there was a 65.2 per cent drop in swordfish landings because the season was closed for two months to protect the species but they received €70,000 in compensation from the government.

Fresh fish landings decreased by 17.1 per cent in value, or by €172,302, to €837,946 in the same period when compared to the corresponding quarter in 2008. The drop was mostly fuelled by the abundance of dolphin fish on the market.
