Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said today that emission levels from the BWSC power station were within acceptable levels because the former governemnt had raised the emission thresholds.
Dr Muscat was asked whether he was prepared to retract his ‘cancer factory’ remark on the Delimara power station after yesterday’s Mepa report which found no deterioration of air quality following the operation of the Delimara BWSC plant using heavy fuel oil.
Dr Muscat said the Nationalist government had raised the emission thresholds to accommodate BWSC. That was why the emissions were within the law.
One could ask the people of Birzebbuga and Marsasxlokk how they had suffered as a result of the Delimara power station.
The building of a new power station using gas would however produce fewer emissions than any plant which used heavy fuel oil.
Replying to other questions during an activity in Marsa, Dr Muscat stopped short of saying how the impeachment process against Mr Justice Lino Farrugia Sacco would be continued, saying only that the government had noted the decision taken by the Commission for the Administration of Justice and the issue would now be discussed in the House Business Committee.
The commission said yesterday that its decision on the impeachment motion moved against the judge by (then) Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi in 2012 continued to hold for the second motion, presented last week by Dr Muscat after the first motion was declared no longer valid.
