The pensions reform process was yesterday discussed at a meeting between Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and representatives from the Alliance of Pensioners' Organisations.

Prior to the closed meeting Dr Gonzi gave a short address to the media when he spoke of the importance of the participation of such organisations in the debate to ensure a sustainable pensions system.

He also spoke of how women's greater participation in the labour market could inject a new stimulus to the economy and eventually contribute to the necessary pension reforms.

Also on the agenda was the formulation of a report on the national strategy on pensions, which the 10 new EU countries had to draw up in the coming months.

Alliance general secretary Albert Tabone spoke of the contribution pensioners could still give to society and said he would be discussing the issue of age discrimination with Dr Gonzi.
