Dr Gaetano Allotta of Agrigento, Sicily - an old friend of Malta - was here on a short visit last week to present a letter to the Prime Minister, Dr Lawrence Gonzi, from the president of Agrigento province, Dr Vincenzo Fontana, inviting him to address a symposium on Mediterranean problems to be held in Agrigento's Archaeological Museum later this year.
The invitation was presented to Dr Tony Abela, Parliamentary Secretary at the Office of the Prime Minister, who received it on Dr Gonzi's behalf.
The symposium will deal with security, co-operation at all levels, economic development and the highly topical issue of illegal immigration, which is particularly affecting both Agrigento province and Malta.
Besides Dr Gonzi, the organisers are inviting Italian Defence Minister Antonio Martino and Admiral Giampaolo di Paola, head of the Italian armed forces.
