The grave of the Prime Minister's mother Inez (nee Galea) at the Addolorata Cemetery has been vandalised, with marble slabs being broken and obscenities written on it.

The grim discovery was made by relatives this morning as they visited the grave on Mother's Day

People on the scene said the grave's marble slabs and candlesticks were broken and there were signs of a fire. There was even obscene language against Mrs Gonzi, who died two years ago.

The Prime Minister was informed.

In a statement the Nationalist Party condemned the vandalism, which was made even worse by the fact that today is Mother's Day. The party expressed its solidarity with the Prime Minister and the Gonzi family.

The Labour Party also condemned the vandalism, describing it as shameful. It hoped the culprits would be caught as soon as possible.

The PL said that Dr Muscat had been in touch with Dr Gonzi to express solidarity.
