The Prime Minister stressed today that everyone should vote in the Divorce Referendum, and politics should not come into it.
Speaking at a Nationalist Party activity in Mellieha, Dr Gonzi said it was everyone's duty and responsibility to vote on Saturday.
The outcome, he said, may have a bearing on society for many years to come.
The choice facing the people, he said, was between keeping something which had existed for thousands of years, or ditching it.
Nothing, he said, could be taken for granted.
The decision , Dr Gonzi said, had nothing to do with politics. The family was something which all political parties held dear. The people should vote according to their conscience. Malta, he said, had many strong families, but it also had families which were going through difficulties.
Society should continue to help all families, particularly those which needed support. It was better to help couples ahead of their marriage and during their marriage, ensuring that they could shoulder their responsibilities for an enduring marriage. The people when they wed committed themselves to stay together in good times and in bad.
It was not about just staying together in the good times, Dr Gonzi said.
