The biggest problem is that the country has "lost" the Nationalist Party, an outgoing PN councillor said on Saturday.

Charlot Cassar clarified the reason for his decision to step down as a PN councillor on Marsascala through a Facebook post. 

"I thank all those who supported me. The biggest problem is not that the PN Lost my services, but that the country lost the Nationalist Party," he wrote. 

On Friday, Mr Cassar announced he had resigned from the Nationalist Party but said he would continue to serve in the Marsascala council as an independent councillor.

"My primary duty is to be fair and just with the people that I serve. To do that, my primary loyalty is to be true to my values, which are honesty, loyalty, transparency and accountability," he said.

"In this context, I no longer feel that I can be part of the Nationalist Party."

Mr Cassar had last August requested that the party's administrative committee should take the necessary steps given the allegations made by blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia against the new party leader Adrian Delia.

Mr Cassar was also involved in setting up the environmental NGO Front Ħarsien ODZ.
