The Nationalist Party has criticised the government for not having yet finalised arrangements for free transport for students in church and private schools, as is the case for those in state schools.

The free transport was promised by both political parties at the last general election and its introduction in the coming scholastic year was announced by the finance minister in the Budget speech last October.

But with the scholastic year now just a few weeks away, parents, transport operators and schools were still in the dark over what would happen, shadow minister Clyde Puli said.

No one had been consulted, and instead of announcing details, the prime minister had said parents would be compensated for any outlay.

Mr Puli urged the government to keep the people informed as soon as possible.
