PN demands clear answers on the situation at the prisons
Reports of confidential conversations being recorded and a prisoner having internet access on his laptop
The Nationalist Party demanded clear answers on Wednesday after it was reported that confidential prison conversations between lawyers and their clients were being recorded, and a prisoner was found to have a laptop which may have had access to the internet.
"The latest reports about what is happening at the Corradino Correctional Facility raise serious concerns about security, fundamental rights and the administration of the prison," the party said.
It said the reports about secret recordings, raised by the Chamber of Advocates on Monday, would, if confirmed, constitute a serious breach of lawyer-client privilege and of the right to a fair defence.
On the other hand, having a prisoner serving a life sentence with internet access on his laptop raised serious questions about controls and security at the prison.
The PN demanded answers and said responsibility must be shouldered by all those who failed in their duties.
"The Minister for Home Affairs must give a clear account of what is happening at Corradino Correctional Facility. The prison must be administered in accordance with the law, with effective security and with full respect for everyone’s fundamental rights," the party said.
