PN demands explanation why Keith Schembri assets freeze was allowed to expire
Attorney General is blamed for 'a serious failure in the administration of justice'
The Nationalist Party has demanded an explanation from the Attorney General as to why an assets freeze imposed by the courts on former chief of staff Keith Schembri was allowed to expire.
A court last week revoked garnishee orders against Keith Schembri’s Kasco Holdings and his wife Josette Schembri Vella after the authorities failed to seek a renewal.
"Full responsibility for this lies at the door of the Attorney General. What has happened is a serious failure in the administration of justice in our country and raises questions as to whether the authorities whose duty it is to safeguard justice are applying different standards depending on who is involved," the PN said.
The party called on the AG to immediately explain how such important freezing orders were allowed to expire and to clarify whether this was incompetence or whether it happened by design.
That had happened, the party said, raised serious doubts about those in positions of responsibility who are supposed to ensure that justice is done, and is seen to be done, equally with everyone.
Schembri is pleading not guilty to money laundering and fraud charges.
