PN leader calls for bipartisan agreement on issues of national importance
Trust, dialogue and press freedom key to lasting reform Alex Borg tells media, social partners
Issues of national importance, including traffic management, should be agreed upon by the country’s two main political parties, as this is the “only way to reach lasting solutions”, PN leader Alex Borg said on Tuesday.
The Opposition leader was speaking at a New Year’s reception for editors, journalists and social partners at Dar Ċentrali.
Borg stressed the importance of journalists’ work in ensuring the truth is known and expressed his concern about the attacks and intimidation that journalists continue to face.
Recalling the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia, Borg said the murder was “an attack on a journalist and on the public’s right to know”.
He added it was “regrettable” that many of the recommendations stemming from the inquiry into her murder have yet to be implemented.
Speaking on a broader context, Borg said that change towards “higher quality” is needed but this change must be based on “serious dialogue” with social partners, professionals, civil society and NGOS, to ensure they are fully involved in shaping the country’s economic policy.
He expressed his hope that this year trust will be rebuilt between institutions and citizens.
