Alex Borg says performance indicators for his MPs are nothing unusual
Borg insists plan is 'not linked to underperformance' of PN lawmakers
Nationalist MPs will soon be required to submit reports to the party leadership detailing their work, Alex Borg said, while denying the move was a response to any MP’s alleged underperformance.
The leader announced his plan to start “tracking” the work of his MPs earlier this month but gave more details to Times of Malta this week.
“They [MPs] will give us a sort of report with details on a number of performance indicators, such as their house visits, their involvement in local committees in their towns and the parliamentary business they initiate, such as parliamentary questions and private members’ bills.”
“There will be several indicators and we will have standard operating procedures (SOPs) in order to be more organised and stronger,” he said.
Borg said the move was part of his plan to professionalise the Nationalist Party, adding that “it is normal for every professional organisation to have performance indicators”.
How often PN MPs will have to submit the report will be set out in the procedures the party will issue internally, Borg said.
Borg insisted he trusted his parliamentary group and denied the decision was taken because any MPs were not doing enough.
“In any company, a CEO has to provide structure. That does not mean he does not trust his workers,” he said.
Asked if he was implementing the measure because he was disappointed in some MPs’ performance, Borg said: “Far from it, this is part of the fresh start (nifs ġdid) and part of that is this measure.”
Nifs ġdid was the PN’s slogan for the last electoral campaign.
