The major political parties raised 672,037 for their coffers in telethons held for most of the day today.

The Nationalist Party raised €436,135 in its annual collection while a further €235,902 were raised by the Labour Party, which this year has also grouped its collections into one.

Supporters were invited to make their donations over the phone or call personally at the respective party headquarters.

The PN offered a wide range of gifts to its supporters, while the Labour Party held a number of activities including a Christmas Village. Both parties laid on a 12-hour programme of entertainment.

The final sums collected were announced by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Opposition leader Joseph Muscat, who thanked their supporters.

In the same events last year, the PN raised €410,525 and the PL €210,511.
