‘We will chart a new direction for Malta’, Alex Borg promises in address

Ordinary people need to start feeling the effects of Malta’s strong economy, Borg says

Alex Borg promised on Monday that the Nationalist Party’s electoral campaign will be a positive one charting a new direction for the country and bearing no hatred for anyone.

In a message hours after Prime Minister Robert Abela announced an early general election, Borg said a new Nationalist government would build on the successes achieved in the past, aiming to translate an economy which is doing well into a better quality of life for the people.

“Today, with calmness, humility, and a strong sense of responsibility, I say to Malta and Gozo: we are ready. Ready to give our country a fresh start; ready to build a government that lives among the people, ready to lead a country with a strong economy, but with a better life for its people; ready to take the next step: from a country that is growing, to a country where people truly feel they are living better,” he said.

He insisted the upcoming election was not about who had the most billboards, or who shouts the loudest, but about everyday life.

“It’s about whether families can live with peace of mind, whether young people can build a future locally, whether workers can live decently, and whether pensioners can live with dignity,” he said, while highlighting concerns about businesses, traffic, and the broader pressures affecting quality of life.

While acknowledging that Malta’s economy was performing well, he said the real question was whether this growth was being felt fairly and sufficiently in people’s daily lives - through wages, housing, environment, time, and overall well-being. He argued that a strong economy should improve people’s lives rather than increase pressure.

"The changes we want to make are not against economic success, but aimed at ensuring that success translates into real benefits for people,” he said, while criticising the government for failing to convert economic growth into improved quality of life.

Borg described the election as a “moment of truth,” not one for slogans, fear, or empty partisanship. He argued that while Malta has a strong economy, it now needs a strong quality of life, with growth that benefits everyone without harming families.

He outlined a vision for a new economic model focused on value rather than volume, prioritising productivity, technology, skills, and trust. He said Malta’s future should not rely on placing more pressure on existing infrastructure, but on developing high-value sectors, promising to explain how in the coming weeks.

“This is the moment to choose whether Malta continues with more of the same, or chooses a new direction. The moment to keep our country’s economic strength, but give it a new soul. Ultimately, this country does not belong to politicians - Malta belongs to you," he said.
