Opposition spokesman on home affairs Jason Azzopardi said today that he was awaiting firm action by the EU on irregular migration in view of comments in October by the Maltese prime minister that he had convinced the bloc to share the burden.

Speaking outside the AFM maritime base in Haywharf on the eve of an EU summit which includes migration on its agenda, Dr Azzopardi said: "On Saturday morning we expect nothing less than results on mandatory burden-sharing and relocation of migrants."

Nationalist MEP Roberta Metsola urged the prime minister to achieve support for burden sharing. She also welcomed a resolution by the European Parliament to fight organised crime including people trafficking and said the government should seek dialogue to convince the EU on migration, rather than take a confrontational stance.
