PN supporters gather in Lija for first mass meeting of campaign

Crowds arrive early as supporters await Alex Borg’s address

Nationalist Party supporters clad in blue or draped in the party’s “maduma” flag have started gathering in Lija for the first mass meeting of the election campaign on Friday afternoon.

PN leader Alex Borg had scheduled the May Day event before Robert Abela announced a snap election for May 30.

While the Labour Party marks 100 years of Workers’ Day celebrations, the PN is also holding its own event.

Borg is not expected to speak until after 6.30pm, but hours earlier the street leading to Lija’s iconic Belvedere tower was already filling up as buses of supporters began arriving.

As they wait, supporters are being kept busy with bars and food stalls, while DJs ramp up the atmosphere and hawkers sell party merchandise.

Borg has spent the week unveiling electoral proposals, including a pledge announced on Friday morning to transform Selmun Palace into a “National Health Village”.

All eyes and ears will be on his speech later as supporters await further pledges.
