PN wants to enshrine environmental protection in the constitution

Bill to be moved in parliament this week

The Nationalist Party wants to make the protection of the environment a fundamental right enshrined in the Constitution, Opposition leader Alex Borg said on Monday.

"With the environment enshrined in the Constitution, supported by intelligent development and sustainable communities, we will have a more beautiful Malta and Gozo for everyone," Borg said in a Facebook message.

He said a Bill to amend the constitution for the purpose will be moved in Parliament this week.

Borg said that Malta was facing a harsh reality – unplanned development, polluted air, threats to the sea and a lack of open spaces where people could relax and enjoy fresh air.

He said the solution lay in giving the environment the highest level of protection under the supreme law of the land.

The people would thus have the fundamental right to a clean environment safeguarded by law.

He added that he wants this to be the generation that gives Malta the identity and environment it deserves.
