The debate on the introduction of divorce in Malta is heating up.
This follows comments made by Social Policy Minister John Dalli. However, I am still at a loss as to where the minister stands on the issue.
The introduction to the Nationalist Party's Basic Principles states:
"The Partit Nazzjonalista forms part of the International Christian Democratic Movement. In fact, it is one of the oldest parties that belong to this movement. It is committed to the fulfilment of Christian Democratic principles in Malta and to the spreading of these principles worldwide.
"The Christian idea of the dignity of man is the basis of all the policies of the Partit Nazzjonalista. Human dignity is rooted in man's relationship with God and with his fellow men, within the family and other voluntary associations, which the State is obliged to assist and promote."
This means that every Nationalist Member of Parliament and all future PN candidates must abide by the principles laid down by the party.
One therefore expects that all Nationalist MPs as well future PN candidates know what the party's principles state and that they are are duty-bound to abide by them. Whoever disagrees with these basic principles should resign from Parliament and from the party.
God's teachings can never be compromised.
