A Nationalist government is a guarantee of the future because it has a clear vision of what it wants for the country, as laid out in the 353 proposals of its electoral manifesto, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said yesterday.

Addressing a well-attended activity in Pjazza Gavino Gulia in Cospicua, a Labour stronghold, Dr Gonzi said there were huge differences between the PN and MLP.

The PN had ambitious targets in education and contrary to the MLP, it wanted everyone to succeed and prosper.

Labour was proposing the introduction of a reception class which, unlike the one in the UK, would mean students would waste a year of their lives.

"Experiments with our children are not permitted. They are twisting what really happens in the UK where they do not have this extra year. Their reception class is Malta's kinder two."

Moving on to other themes, Dr Gonzi said the government was doing all it could to save the shipyards by, among other things, proposing the use of the Senglea side of the dock area as a cruise liner terminal. The General Workers' Union was opposed to the idea and had issued directives for shipyard workers so that this area is not used.

Party secretary general Joe Saliba thanked the people for their donations during the fund-raising campaign on Saturday and urged supporters to remain calm and not fall for provocation.

"Our focus has to be votes for Lawrence Gonzi. We have always been against violence. I prefer students shutting up a politician rather than politicians shutting up students," he said.
