Only half the amount owed to the government from traffic contravention tickets issued by the police and the transport authority last year have been coughed up so far, according to figures released in Parliament.
The total value of tickets issued by the police and the Malta Transport Authority (ADT) was €2,842,792 but €1,432,011 have been paid up so far.
The amount does not include tickets issued by local wardens.
St Julians has the dubious honour of being the locality with the largest number of tickets issued, for a total value of €650,000. However, over €290,000 of that remain uncollected. The authorities are also owed nearly €50,000 for fines meted out in Ħamrun, more than half the total value of tickets issued there last year.
In Kerċem, only two tickets were issued in a whole year, valued at €81.52. The most common offence was speeding, with 31,145 tickets issued, while the least common was parking on the pavement, at 8,507.
