Police arrest two after spate of pickpocketing cases in Valletta
Two women were arrested by a constable on foot patrol
The police have arrested two women in connection with a series of pickpocketing cases in Valletta.
The arrests were made on Sunday afternoon.
The police said an officer was on foot patrol at City Gate when a passerby reported having just seen two women stealing items from another woman.
The police officer immediately approached and arrested the two suspects. They were taken to court on Tuesday, where they admitted charges of theft.
Times of Malta reported earlier on Tuesday that tourist guides were concerned by an increase in pickpocketing in Valletta targeting both themselves and their clients.
Ana De Barro, president of the Malta Union of Tourist Guides, said that while pickpocketing typically increases at this time of year with the start of the tourist season, this year has seen a noticeable rise in cases that came to light.
She noted incidents occurring at Upper Barrakka Gardens, the Valletta entrance, and the bus terminus.
