An American man was yesterday charged with stealing a woman's handbag on Monday and assaulting two police sergeants on Tuesday.

Magistrate Lawrence Quintano heard Stephen Galli, 41, residing in Sliema, plead not guilty to stealing a woman's bag from a Sliema shop, assaulting and threatening two officers and disobeying the police.

He was granted bail against a personal guarantee of Lm2,000.

Police Inspector Stephen Gatt prosecuted.

Lawyer Anglu Farrugia appeared for Mr Galli.
