The police association will be seeking legal remedy after senior officers were still not paid for hours put in during the Valletta and Commonwealth summits.
While all police grades – from constables to sergeant majors – were paid their dues, senior officers have still not received anything for the hours they put in or “were forced to work” during the two summits in November, the association said in a statement this morning.
During a recent meeting, Home Affairs Minister Carm Abela said the task force responsible for the two activities did not fall under his ministry but under the Office of the Prime Minister.
It was therefore decided that those officers who worked more than 150 hours above their regular working hours should only be paid a disturbance allowance, which amounts to a maximum of 10 per cent of their basic salary – around €170. Moreoever, for some reason, no payment was made for Sundays and public holidays.
“This abuse needs to stop once and for all. This is not an issue of ‘disturbance’, but a matter where one was forced and obliged to work overtime,” the association.
