Police detain 31 people living irregularly in Gozo
African, Asian and European nationals will be deported
Police have detained 31 people found to be living irregularly in Gozo during a series of inspections targeting illegal immigration.
The inspections, which are carried out regularly, involved officers from various police sections together with detention officers.
The detained individuals are nationals of African, Asian and European countries.
In a statement on Friday, the police said the individuals are currently being held at a detention centre while arrangements are made for their return to their country of origin or another country where they are legally entitled to live.
The police said they would continue carrying out targeted inspections across Malta together with the competent authorities to tackle irregular immigration, abuse of labour laws and the exploitation of vulnerable people.
"Malta remains committed to fulfilling its national and international obligations in this field while ensuring its laws are enforced with full respect for the fundamental rights of every person," the police said.
