A man who sub-let a garage was surprised when he was questioned by the police after a stolen car, which was turned into spare parts, was found inside.

The police made the find after a tip-off. A man informed them that he rented out the garage to another who, it later transpired, in turn sub-let the garage to the alleged thief.

Clive Agius, 23, is pleading not guilty to stealing a Toyota Corolla, a Honda motorbike, stereo equipment from another vehicle and breaking two periods of probation.

Police Inspector Keith Arnaud explained in court that the police had been following the accused for quite some time and information from different sources led them to a garage.

Inside they found the completely-dismantled Toyota and other items stolen throughout January.

When discussing bail, the prosecuting officer highlighted Mr Agius's criminal record and Magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna read out parts of it, noting that the most recent crime committed was in 2003. This point was taken up by defence lawyer Joseph Giglio who noted it was some years ago that his client actually committed any crimes and so should be granted bail since it occurred some time ago. However, the prosecution commented that the accused had a pending case.

The court remanded Mr Agius in custody.
