Would-be thieves fired shots at a police car after they were surprised trying to steal from a shop in Balzan.

No-one was injured in the shooting.

The police said that at about 3 a.m. yesterday they were tipped off that unknown persons were trying to break into a shop in Main Street.

District police accompanied by police from the Mobile Squad went to the spot to investigate.

But when the suspects saw the police approaching they ran into their car, a Hyundai Accent, and drove straight in the direction of a police car which blocked their way. The police car was slightly damaged.

The police then tried to follow the Hyundai.

It was at this point that shots were fired in the direction of the police, the police said.
