Watch: Police officers shield referee from angry amateur footballers

Several players and officials received lengthy suspensions by MFA

Multiple footballers and club officials have been handed hefty bans after police officers were forced to enter the pitch to protect the referee during a National Amateur League II clash between Mdina Knights and Santa Venera Lightnings last weekend.

The clash at the Sirens Stadium turned into a feisty affair, with referee Matthias Buttigieg forced to show three red cards and report six other players and officials for misbehaviour and dissent after the final whistle.

One player was handed a five-match ban and a club official got an even longer ban following the fracas.
