Police to step up community presence with new patrolling support recruits

'Determined to keep our country among safest in the world' - Police Commissioner

The police will be “more present within communities” following the introduction of the first ever cohort of 34 Police Patrolling Community Support Officers.

The PPCSOs will provide a “visible, accessible and reassuring presence” in localities, working as part of, and hand in hand with, the police within communities, together with local councils, schools, and community organisations.

Police Commissioner Angelo Gafà explained the introduction of PPCSOs “is not an isolated initiative, but an essential part of a broader vision” focused on the concept of “safer communities – smarter policing” and based on the community needs.

“At present, we have 170 officers assigned to Community Policing Teams, including 34 Patrol & Community Support Officers. As we continue to implement our vision, we remain determined to keep our country among the safest in the world,” Gafà said.

The Home Affairs Ministry said on Friday the PPCSOs will maintain a “strong presence within the community through continuous patrols, address everyday challenges, intervene early in situations of antisocial behaviour, offer safety advice and strengthen the relationship between citizens and the police service”.

Commenting on the appointments of the new officers, Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri said they represent “the core of our vision for a police force that is closer to the people”.

“These are officers who listen, understand and act before problems escalate. By investing in this service, we are building safer, more cohesive and stronger communities, reducing crime rates and keeping them low, while strengthening trust between citizens and institutions,” Camilleri said.
