The police yesterday seized 650 grammes of heroin recently imported from Turkey and are holding three people to help them in their investigations.
The police said the heroin was found in capsule form in raids carried out in two locations.
The first raid was carried out on an apartment in Bugibba, where the police seized 45 capsules containing about 600 grammes of the drug.
The police are holding a 25-year-old Libyan man who lives in Malta and a 23-year-old Maltese woman in connection with this case.
The second raid was carried out in a hotel in Paceville, where the police arrested a 38-year-old woman, a citizen of Ghana travelling on an Italian passport, who was found to be carrying six capsules containing heroin.
Duty magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera was informed and appointed a number of experts to assist with the inquiry.
Investigations are being carried out by Inspector Neil Harrison.
