A total of 1,100 ecstasy pills - considered a big haul - and around five grammes of cocaine and cannabis were yesterday found by the police in a car that had been abandoned after a chase.

The police said counterfeit money and gold were also seized from the car and a 22-year-old man was arrested.

Members of the mobile squad were on patrol in the Attard area during the night between Tuesday and yesterday when they noticed two stationary cars and a few people nearby.

Their suspicions raised, the police approached but the people made off in their cars.

The police gave chase, forcing a lone driver to abandon his car and run off.

In the car the police found the drugs, the counterfeit money and the gold. They arrested the man later.

Duty magistrate Antonio Vella was informed of the case and appointed court experts to help him in the inquiry.

This was another significant drug haul following a find of 425 ecstasy pills in an operation in Paceville two weeks ago.

Around 14 kilos of heroin, over 6.5 kilos of cocaine and over 14,000 ecstasy pills have been seized so far this year.
