Police warn of Facebook messenger scam
Messages claim unusual activity detected on Facebook account
Police have issued a warning about what appears to be a widespread scam in which fraudsters are sending messages impersonating Meta, the parent company of Facebook.
In a social media post, police warned about a scam message circulating on Facebook Messenger that falsely appears to come from Meta Verified. In this case, the word 'verified' is misspelt.
The messages claim that unusual activity has been detected on your account and request that you verify your identity through a link sent either via email or in some cases a mobile phone number.
"This message is a scam and you are strongly advised not to click on any links contained in such messages and not provide personal details, passwords, or account information," the police said in a statement.
Messages containing typos or grammar errors, such as this, are common indicators of scams, they said.
"If you receive such a message, it is recommended to delete and report the message to Meta," police said.
