Police warn of scam calls from spoofed 'local' numbers

Fraudsters posing as officers ask for personal details and email addresses

The police have warned about fraudulent phone calls from “local” mobile numbers with callers posing as police officers.

In a statement on Thursday, the police said the callers from the “spoofed” numbers ask a series of questions and request personal details, including email addresses, in an attempt to arrange an appointment with an officer.

The police warned the public to ignore such calls and, most importantly, not to provide any information to the caller.

They added that anyone in doubt can verify the legitimacy of a call by contacting Crime Stop on 119.
