The Labour Party raised Lm71,150 in a fund raising campaign on Saturday, saying it was Lm31,000 more than its target.
The party said the campaign, dubbed For the benefit of the Maltese and Gozitan people, demonstrated unity and enthusiasm within the party. Thousands of supporters called at party headquarters, in Hamrun to give their contribution and watch a 12-hour show held at the conference hall. Donations were also made over the phone.
The party thanked its supporters for their generosity, saying they had realised that the country needed a Labour Party that was strong. This, it added, had also been a protest message to the government over its employment, welfare and taxation policies.
The Nationalist Party yesterday also held a fund raising campaign to finance the building of the second phase of its headquarters, in Pietà. The sum raised was Lm105,366.
Thousands of people toured the first half of the building which will house the party media's offices including new, large studios for Net Television, one of which was inaugurated for the occasion.
