80s pop icons Bonnie Tyler and Kim Wilde to headline Summer Lust festival

The well-known British singers wil headline the festival in Għaxaq

They were pop icons in the 1980s and now Bonnie Tyler and Kim Wilde will take to the stage on separate nights - at a music festival in Għaxaq.

The upcoming performances were announced by organisers of the Summer Lust festival with Wilde set to perform on Friday, May 15 and Tyler the following week, on May 22.

Describing Wilde as “legendary” and an “icon”, organisers noted this year’s performance will be the singer’s first in Malta, while preparing audiences to “Get ready for a night packed with 80s energy, sing-along anthems, and pure nostalgia under the Maltese sky”.

Tyler, “the unmistakable voice of rock”, meanwhile, promises “That raspy powerhouse voice… those goosebump moments... that electric festival atmosphere”, organisers wrote.

Wilde found fame in 1981 with her debut single Kids in America, which has since become her signature song. Her success continued with hits including Chequered Love and Cambodia, establishing her as a regular chart presence.

Other well-known hits include a cover of You Keep Me Hangin’ On, which reached the top of the US Billboard Hot 100, while her 1988 album Close produced several UK Top 10 singles, including You Came and Never Trust a Stranger.

Tyler, meanwhile, rose to international fame in the late 1970s, her signature husky voice helping to define the pop-rock ballads of the era.

The Welsh singer first broke through with her 1977 hit It’s a Heartache, which charted strongly on both sides of the Atlantic and established her internationally.

Her 1983 hit Total Eclipse of the Heart is arguably her best-known song alongside Holding Out for a Hero, which she recorded for the 1984 film Footloose

Both performances will feature supporting acts, with Wilde’s concert seeing opening performances from DJs Pierre Cordina and Alex Grech, and Tyler’s welcoming Glen Vella and band and singers Matt Blxck and Gaia.

General admission is free, by donation, with VIP and seated tickets available for purchase online.

Both concerts are supported by VisitMalta and Arts Council Malta, with Tyler’s performance also seeing backing from Rock’n Malta and Festivals Malta, through a €45,000 investment.
