Trespassers broke into the Paola post office at about 3 a.m. yesterday.

After entering the office through the back door in Triq il-Foss, the burglars moved a big safe a number of metres and tore open all parcels that had been stacked on shelves ready to be distributed.

Some post office boxes were also opened but no letters or any other office equipment went missing. No money is kept at the post offices at night.

Maltapost spokesman Tony Barbaro Sant said nothing seemed to have been found missing. The intruders did not manage to open the safe.

"We feel sorry for whoever sent these parcels and all those who should have received them," he said. The parcels had been sorted and placed on the shelves on Thursday afternoon by Maltapost employees.

Maltapost will soon start putting the bits together and will then contact the customers to collect what's left of their parcels.

The police are investigating.
