We refer to a letter regarding the recently introduced new postcodes, by Mario Mizzi of Swieqi, wherein the correspondent queried why it was felt necessary to include a three-letter locality code besides the numeric code, when the town or village is already part of the address.

By way of explanation, the three-letter code is needed in instances where individuals, whose residence is situated within the territorial boundaries of a certain local council, use the name of a different locality.

In the absence of the postcode which indicates the right locality, mail to such addresses could be subject to unnecessary delays as it would be channelled to the wrong postman.

We trust this clarifies matters.
